The Philippine Literary Festival—the first of its kind—was hosted by Raffles Hotel and National Bookstore. It featured talks held by multi-award winning writers, book launches for Manix Abrera’s “14” Silent Comics and Boy Abunda’s Make Your Nanay Proud, and a poetry jamming session with Mikael de Lara Co, Allan Popa, Kristian Cordero, and Mark Anthony Cayanan.
A few topics discussed were Speculative Fiction: Why Libraries Must Have Them by Dean Francis Alfar, Writing Non-Fiction Today by RJ Ledesma, Chay Hofileña, Pam Pastor, and Arnel Patawaran, New Literature by Sarge Lacuesta and Dean Francis Alfar, Short Fiction by Women by Menchu Aquino-Sarmiento, Nikki Alfar, and Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta, and Pagtuturo ng Nobela Ko by Edgar Samar and Allan Derain.
Author spotlights for Amy Tan (Joy Luck Club, The Valley of Amazement, The Kitchen God’s Wife) and Chang-Rae Lee (Native Speaker, The Surrendered, A Gesture Life) served as the highlights of the festival. Book signings were held for both authors on the last day of the event.
The complete list of panelists as well as a copy of the full itinerary may be found at the festival’s website.
