Writing Janus Silang. Dr. Edgar Calabia Samar, author of Si Janus Silang at ang Tiyanak ng Tábon, shared his writing process for the novel at the latest installment of Heights’ Creative Talk series.

“Ang Pagkatha kay Janus Silang,” the latest in the Heights Creative Talk Series, was held on February 4, 2015 at SEC-A 124A in the Ateneo de Manila University. It featured Dr. Edgar Calabia Samar, author of Walong Diwata sa Pagkahulog, and Sa Kasunod ng 909, who talked about his latest young adult novel, Si Janus Silang at ang Tiyanak ng Tábon.

Samar took the audience through many aspects of the writing process of Janus Silang. He talked about how he took inspiration from the folk stories he used to hear from his family, and how he conceptualized the early ideas of his novel. He also spoke about dealing with different publishers before settling with Adarna House.

Napakahalaga sa pagsusulat ng nobela [ang disiplina] ([Discipline] matters in writing a novel),” said Samar on his creative process. He shared that he was able to complete the first draft of Janus Silang in a month by managing his time wisely. He also shared his experience working with Adarna House, the impact that they had on the creation of the novel, and his process of revising the novel before it was finally published.

The floor was then opened to questions, and fans of the series asked Samar about details of the first Janus Silang book, and tried to uncover some of the plot points of the future books in the series. “Ma-eexplain dito kung bakit wala tayong nakikitang mananaggal ngayon (The reason for us not seeing a manananggal will be explained),” said Samar about the second book.

Aside from this, he also mentioned his plans to expand the trilogy into four or more books, and his hope to release the second installment of the series in May of this year.

After the event, Samar sold copies of Janus Silang as well as his other novels, and had a meet and greet session and autograph signing with fans.
